Reddit is social media online platform. It is like a collection of web forums. Each forum is called a subreddit or a community. Each subreddit can have posts of different types such as text, image, video, link, etc. Each post can have a hierarchy of comments. Reddit is a bit special and different to most other social media platforms. One important differentiation to other platforms like Facebook and Twitter is that Reddit is content-centered not user-centered.
However, Reddit is not a simple collection of web forums. It is actual quit sophisticated. If Reddit would be a country, it has laws which are on Reddit are called rules. Each subreddit/community would be like a state or province that is residing within the Reddit country. Every state/province (i.e. subreddit) can define its own set of laws (rules) that apply to this specific territory. In this analogy each user (a so called Redditor) would be like a citizen.
What makes Reddit especially special is that it uses some aspects of gamification with points called Karma and voting system for posts and comments. Each post and comment can receive one up or downvote from each user. Those votes change the Karma count of the poster/commenter.
Reddit has unique and specific culture. It is somehow about being funny and friendly as well as to help each other fellow Redditor out. The Karma system promotes answering other peoples questions and given good advice. It kind of enables almost altruistic behavior.
